Cain

Cain, Cain, Cain. Such a pivotal character to cast. I knew that there was going to be a history behind Cain and Lilith's story. If you google it, you will find some things about them being the first vampires. I took that idea and ran with it. But when I think of Cain, I think of these paintings . . .

I knew I needed a strong looking person to be him, a least to move around in my mind. I originally thought of Adrien Grier. However, that just doesn't seem to sit well with me. Adrien Grier was not the right personality. As I kept looking, I really gave Cain some more thought.

Even though he doesn't play a ginormous part in the story, Cain is intrical to the foundation of the Fraternity. He is the man culprit in creating the army of the undead. After Lilith finds him, she seduces him and convinces him to leave his kingdom. Lilith has Inanna change him, not knowing she could do it herself, and the three of them roam the Earth for centuries together.

Lilith describes their connection as that of soul mates. When one hurts, the other feels it. Her and Cain were destined to be together from the beginning of time. Somehow, Lilith is able to see the coupling of their souls, and she knows it will be for eternity. There is absolutely nobody on the Earth who is strong enough to face Lilith besides Cain, and therefore, he is the only man who is resilient enough to be her lover.

In Chapter 18, "The Truth Behind Those Eyes," Robert describes their relationship like this:

"Our souls are cut from the same clothe, woven together with the same thread. He is the half that makes me whole . . . Souls are made in pairs, and intentionally separated on Earth to find each other. That is the true reason of life. Once your soul finds that missing puzzle piece, everything clicks into place. Cain's soul is bonded to mine, and will be for all of eternity," she would explain.'

I knew she couldn't possibly be lying. No one we'd ever came across in all of history did what Cain did to her. Lilith was a slave to his soul, as she called it, and he was a slave to hers. They shared a passion for each other that would split the world in two, and when they were together, they thought and acted in a unit. When one would hurt, the other would feel it.'

Eventually, Lilith's eye begins to wander and she meets Robert and Thomas, thus beginning the start of this army of the undead.

I also knew that I needed Cain to be terrifying. I needed someone who was able to be a rational leader, but who was also able to strike fear into anyone who disobeyed. There is an altercation between Robert and Cain, and I saw it so vividly in my mind. I knew I wanted Robert to appear minuscle to this God, and I needed an Adonis to project that. Cain is very overbearing, very warrior-esque and very dominating. His presence is so overpowering that anyone who stands near him is tempted to cower in a corner. And I needed someone who just embodies that to their core.

Thanks be to heaven for 300! I finally landed on Gerard Butler. Once I'd found him, the entire thing fell into place. I can totally see him as the dominate type, and definitely what I needed for Cain.
